I would like to tell you about a new novel from an old friend of my sons. Matt Jones’ novel comes out soon and you need to have a look.
Matt’s new novel is a poignant study in humanity, pain, suffering and war, but not the way you think. In turns pensive, profane and sardonic, this tale of a young officer’s journey of self-discovery is a poignant story of the too often unseen personal cost of serving in war. The book is due for release on Amazon on 20 March and is available now for pre-order in Kindle version.
The novel is not the quick and easy throw-away airport novel, nor the cozy murder mystery that is read and quickly forgotten. It is the confusing, sometimes painful, always gritty discomfort of real life under difficult circumstances eloquently scribed onto stained paper. This is occasionally a dark tale, but it walks the reader into the light often enough to keep him engaged, frequently at a visceral level.
There are echoes in Matt’s writing of William Faulkner’s A Light in August and Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, all wrapped together in the quixotic poetry reminiscent of Canada’s own Leonard Cohen. Matt’s ability to manipulate language to express thought and feeling is a rare gift and his use of common Canadian military profanity and politically incorrect obscenities (both social and sexual) will strike a chord for military and civilian readers alike.
Matt deftly captures emotional growth through pain, and Predators, Reapers and Deadlier Creatures is a must read odyssey.
